The sorry state of STAR's internet presence

Google is undoubtedly the most powerful search engine on earth. Google your name and you'll get at least one or two relevant hits - it's THAT comprehensive. It was thus VERY depressing when I got the results of my Google searches for our school's name:

  • For 'STAR Ipoh', Result No.1 was a hotel website and NONE of the results on the first page were relevant to our alma mater.
  • For 'Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman STAR Ipoh', Result No.1 was a Wikipedia entry on Ipoh in general, where STAR was mentioned, together with ACS, SMI, etc as one of the schools in town.
  • The worst result was for 'Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman' - Result No.1 was on the first Agung, highlighting that he went to school in MAKTAB MELAYU KUALA KANGSAR!!!!

On not ONE of the 3 searches could I find a website dedicated to STAR on the first page result. What is this?! It's as if we don't exist in cyberspace, and in 2005, that's a very bad thing indeed.

It's granted that because the words 'Sekolah', 'Tuanku', 'Abdul' and 'Rahman' are so common, a lot of irrelevant results would be shown. However, if there were a proper STAR website that got a lot of hits, it would surely turn up as the first result on a Google search.

In a few days or weeks, obw2006.blogspot will be No.1 on the same Google searches, no doubt about it. But this is just a blog, dedicated to ONE event organised by ONE batch of the school. In all humility, it hardly deserves to be the torch-bearer for the school in cyber space.

What can we do about it, chaps? The situation should not be allowed to persist going into our golden jubilee.

a humble suggestion from a passer-by... if you want obw2006.blogspot.com to be No.1 on Google, why not post a photo plus profile of every contributor? putting a human face (beautifully-photoshopped, digitally-maimed or otherwise) to hypertext will surely garner the hits.

ps: by the way, what's OBW. Osman Bin Wok? LOL, just joking. :)

Another way is to buy words in Google, don't know how much "Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman" will be; cheaper alternative is to have more text in website; greater chance that the combination of words will show up in the users searches - unique words / combinations are best.

My 2 cents

What happened to Star86 Online? It had some classic articles including some which were plundered by MCOBA for their 100 years book. Are those lost forever?

www.budakstar.net tu ok jugak. Cuma tak banyak post. Mostly forum.
Ada jugak beberapa broken link kat situ.

Yes, I would have to agree that finding 'STAR IPOH' from goooogle or Yaaaaho will give all sort of result. There are still no specific site that unite us all.

I am going to be very hard with all of you "STARIANS" out there. Pls check your values of being a Starian. What does it mean to you to be one? How do you feel to be one? We need to carry out the value check!! Perhaps then we can proceed.

Perhaps we r still basking in the glory of yesteryear n have yet to find the desire n courage to venture globally, with the STARIAN name moving ahead alongside...

hmm... i think the problem is that there's not much to be proud of about the school these days. maybe the record breaking 97 straight A's in the recent PMR exams will remind everyone, including students and oldboys alike, about the pride the school once had. for me the most memorable event was the year we won the PPM debate (Bahasa Melayu) in 1996. i was in form 1 that year, 1996. after that it all went downhill.
